I mentioned on Tuesday how the Bowling Green Daily reported that independent gubernatorial candidate Gatewood Galbraith attended a rally in support WI Gov. Scott Walker last month.
I asked Gatewood’s campaign about this, as well as several other people that attended the rally. As for what really happened that day, the answer is a bit murky. But I’ll just give you their interpretations, and you can make out from it what you choose.
Here is Gatewood’s response:
“What the story doesn’t say is that I was there, counter demonstrating, IN SUPPORT of the unions, as were several other attendees. But let’s get something else out into the open. There are several items I have always stood for and less government and lower taxes are two of them. That does not make me a Tea Partier, any more that it makes me a Democrat or Republican. Keep an open mind Brother.”
I talked to three other people who attended the rally, and their accounts differ slightly from Gatewood’s, as well as each others’.
The first person I talked to I says that Gatewood was mingling with the tea party supporters the entire time, and was even introduced by one of the speakers to cheers. There was no statement of opposition to the rally from Gatewood that he knew of, and assumed that he was there to support the rally.
The second person I talked to says that Gatewood was there gathering petition signatures for his candidacy, and when several people turned him down (saying they’d think about it), Gatewood angrily insulted them. He says that he did not see or hear Gatewood either supporting or opposing Gov. Walker. He says that Gatewood refers to himself as a tea party supporter, but thinks that’s hard to believe based on how he insulted them.
The third person I talked to says that he signed Gatewood’s candidacy petition, but didn’t see or hear Gatewood say anything that was pro or anti-Walker.
I also called the newspaper, and they say that Gatewood or his campaign never called the paper for a retraction.
So, there’s the story. And yes, it’s a bit confusing. But I thought it was only proper to update you folks on Gatewood’s correction of the BGDN story, and the perspectives of several people there.
