An update on Gatewood and the Scott Walker rally

I mentioned on Tuesday how the Bowling Green Daily reported that independent gubernatorial candidate Gatewood Galbraith attended a rally in support WI Gov. Scott Walker last month.

I asked Gatewood’s campaign about this, as well as several other people that attended the rally. As for what really happened that day, the answer is a bit murky. But I’ll just give you their interpretations, and you can make out from it what you choose.

Here is Gatewood’s response:

“What the story doesn’t say is that I was there, counter demonstrating, IN SUPPORT of the unions, as were several other attendees. But let’s get something else out into the open. There are several items I have always stood for and less government and lower taxes are two of them. That does not make me a Tea Partier, any more that it makes me a Democrat or Republican. Keep an open mind Brother.”

I talked to three other people who attended the rally, and their accounts differ slightly from Gatewood’s, as well as each others’.

The first person I talked to I says that Gatewood was mingling with the tea party supporters the entire time, and was even introduced by one of the speakers to cheers. There was no statement of opposition to the rally from Gatewood that he knew of, and assumed that he was there to support the rally.

The second person I talked to says that Gatewood was there gathering petition signatures for his candidacy, and when several people turned him down (saying they’d think about it), Gatewood angrily insulted them. He says that he did not see or hear Gatewood either supporting or opposing Gov. Walker. He says that Gatewood refers to himself as a tea party supporter, but thinks that’s hard to believe based on how he insulted them.

The third person I talked to says that he signed Gatewood’s candidacy petition, but didn’t see or hear Gatewood say anything that was pro or anti-Walker.

I also called the newspaper, and they say that Gatewood or his campaign never called the paper for a retraction.

So, there’s the story. And yes, it’s a bit confusing. But I thought it was only proper to update you folks on Gatewood’s correction of the BGDN story, and the perspectives of several people there.

Rand Paul on the Daily Show tonight

11:00, tune in. I’m keeping my expectations down, as Jon Stewart seems to be doing the whole new tone civility thing (ask Rummy). Then again, if Paul says something about lazy spoiled public school teachers, things could get interesting.

While Rand is in New York, he’ll be raising bucketloads of cash at $5,000 a pop from an anti-union PAC. If Ayn Rand believed in God or heaven, she would be looking down on him right now and be so, so proud of him:

Heckuva job, Scottie!

Also, did anyone else catch Lexington Councilman Jay McChord trying to play Scott Walker at the work session yesterday? Funny stuff…

Heckuva job, Scottie!

We’ll have our full poll on the Wisconsin conflict out tomorrow but here’s the most interesting finding: if voters in the state could do it over today they’d support defeated Democratic nominee Tom Barrett over Scott Walker by a a 52-45 margin.

The difference between how folks would vote now and how they voted in November can almost all be attributed to shifts within union households. Voters who are not part of union households have barely shifted at all- they report having voted for Walker by 7 points last fall and they still say they would vote for Walker by a 4 point margin. But in households where there is a union member voters now say they’d go for Barrett by a 31 point margin, up quite a bit from the 14 point advantage they report having given him in November.

The Hillbilly was there and shot these videos, including the hell-raising Kathy Stein:

Oh, and if you for some reason needed a reminder of how worthless local TV news is when it comes to covering events like these, look at this steaming pile of fair and balances from WKYT:

I wasn’t at the rally yesterday, but I was at another political event and captured some nice video that you’ll be hearing about shortly. Get the popcorn ready.

As Wisconsin Teabag Governor Scott Walker manufactures a phony budget crisis in order to bust unions, the predictable hackery and lies have emerged from the usual suspects in the media.

If you’re looking for a place to read up on how to rebut (refudiate) each of these lies about the workers demonstrating in Wisconsin, here you go.

And a tip of the hat to Republican ego. Who knows where they’d be without it. Word of advice: next time you decide to make a nationwide attack on unions, it’s probably not a great idea to start it in Wisconsin.

Rand Paul says that he would have stood right next to Martin Luther King as he marched to expand the power of unions and help the federal government mandate how private businesses operated, and by God I believe him.

Rand Paul has said a lot of callous things during this campaign, but perhaps no other group of people has taken more of the brunt of it than mine workers.

Here’s what it looks like when the United Mine Workers fight back (click pic to enlarge):

Rand Paul believes in letting the Free Hand of the Dead Mine Worker Market do it’s work without our interference. We’ll see how that plays in western and eastern Kentucky.
