GOP 2012 Circus Roundup

July 6, 2011

In case you lost track over the holiday weekend, here’s a roundup of what’s been happening in The Greatest Show on Earth:

  • Mitt Romney is a human pinwheel, which is fascinating to watch. Over the span of one week, he’s managed to say Obama made the recession worse, then denied ever saying it, then managed to say that again. It’s not huge in itself, but when your base is wary of this and you have a new one every week, it adds up.
  • Another New Hampshire poll shows Mitt leading easily. Unfortunately for him, it’s the second straight NH poll to show Michele Bachmann sprinting up to 2nd place.
  • And look at this. Joining Oregon and Montana as states where Bachmann is leading the GOP field in a poll is New Mexico. The West is looking like Bachmann country, and it’s only July.
  • Ron Paul must have done something to really piss off David Duke, because he’s thinking about withholding his support of Father Liberty and running for president on the GOP ticket himself.
  • Even if Ron Paul doesn’t have David Duke in his corner, he does have another SPLC certified extremist campaigning for him in Iowa soon. In late June, Rand Paul will take part in Liberty Bus Tour through the Hawkeye State.
  • Unfortunately for Ron Paul, Iowa grows corn, not poppies. He’s going to lose hard, but he might be able to compete with Pawlenty.
  • HermanCainia is so full of Liberty and Awesomeness that he’s already got some kind of gay witch hunt happening with his staff and volunteers. Catch the Fever, not The Gay!

…and so can you!

I’d take a loyalty oath to that man any day.

There can be only one (Palin vs. Bachmann)

We have some more splendid news from the Greatest Show on Earth (2012 GOP primary). Not only is Michele Bachmann almost 100% in, she’s hired a real pro, Ed Rollins, who ran Mike Huckabee’s almost victorious 2008 race. And as I’ve said before, if Palin doesn’t run, she will be my front runner for Iowa.

Which makes this quote from Ed Rollins today, well:

“Sarah has not been serious over the last couple of years,” Rollins told Brian Kilmeade on his radio show, Kilmeade and Friends. “She got the Vice Presidential thing handed to her, she didn’t go to work in the sense of trying to gain more substance, she gave up her governorship.”

He suggested that the contrast would favor Bachmann.

“Michele Bachmann and others [have] worked hard, she has been a leader of the Tea Party which is a very important element here, she has been an attorney, she has done important things with family values.”

“She is probably the best communicator [in the GOP field] now that Mike Huckabee’s not in there,” he said.

Oh, you just know that Sarah Palin is going to come back swinging, because that’s all she knows how to do. Which means that we can now sit back and watch an epic battle of Crazy vs. Crazy, Tea vs. Tea, Real Amurka vs. Real Amurka.

Start popping.

Also, PPP polled Round III of “The Show”, finding that Romney is actually leading in South Carolina:

Romney- 27%
Palin- 18%
Cain- 12%
Gingrich- 12%
Bachmann- 9%
Paul- 7%
Pawlenty- 4%
Huntsman- 2%

Yikes, that isn’t good news. Especially with the new WaPo poll showing Romney and Obama in a dead heat. But never fear, the GOP base will eat him alive over the next 7 months.

In other bad news, HermanCainia hurt his GOP street cred, saying that he would actually hire a qualified gay person in his cabinet. However, he did somewhat save himself by adding this qualifier:

So yep, I don’t have a problem with appointing an openly gay person. Because they’re not going to try to put sharia law in our laws.

Amen. This is the kind of common sense thinking that has HermanCainia sweeping the nation

In the meantime, Palin’s response in 10… 9… 8…

The Greatest Show on Earth (Iowa) is revving its engine

PPP just released its Iowa poll for the GOP presidential primary, and it’s looking like a free-for-all:

Romney- 21
Palin- 15
Cain- 15
Gingrich- 12
Bachmann- 11
Pawlenty- 10
Paul- 8
Huntsman- 0

A little surprising to see Obamacare 1.0 in the lead, and I doubt that will last.

Rick Santorum was not included in the poll, but it looks like he’ll get in the mix soon.

If Palin enters the race, she’ll cut into Bachmann’s support, but I still think that is somewhat doubtful. If Palin doesn’t, I still think that Bachmann is the favorite, as Iowa caucus goers are… well, eccentric. Plus, her favorablilty spread (53/16) is the best among the candidates polled. And all indications are that Bachmann is in, very soon..

As for Herman Cain Fever, I’m still doubtful, but if he keeps putting out awesome country campaign songs like this, you never know.

And then we get fun stuff like this:

Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) says he is considering running for president after frustrated conservative activists have pleaded with him to run.

DeMint told The Hill that he has discussed a White House bid with his wife and will pray on the question out of respect for his supporters across the country.

I wonder how long that little Rand Paul/Jim DeMint Honeymoon would last if DeMint started trying to cut into Father Liberty’s Tea Party mojo. Popcorn would be required, especially since DeMint went along with the Patriot Act re-authorization.

Either way, the Greatest Show on Earth is ready to start up, to see who gets the head start on the race to lose to Barack Obama.

Herman Cain Fever!

The first Republican presidential debate was last night, and boy was it a doozy. If you’re a Democrat that watched it, you are probably still shaking in your boots at what a strong field of candidates they have. But one stood above the rest.

Ladies and gentleman, welcome to The Herman Cain Revolution:

I, for one, welcome our new Godfathers Overlord. As a trusted member of the new media, I can help him round up subjects to toil in his underground pizza kitchens.
