2011 KY AG race

A filing day in Frankfort

Jack Conway filed for the Attorney General race today, and Phil Moffett and Mike Harmon filed for the Governor’s race.

Despite the claims of David Adams that the Moffett campaign has the support of lots of establishment Republicans, none were present at either his filing or his very sparsely attended “campaign kickoff” afterward at the RPK headquarters. Hmm, maybe he’s saving them for later, along with their campaign contributions.

At Jack Conway’s announcement in the small press room at the capitol building, he admitted that he gave considerable thought to whether he was going to run, but denied rumors that he ever was leaning towards not running. He also said that he is assembling a “new campaign team”. I asked him if that means that he will be hiring key staff members that were different from his senate campaign, and he said that they would be new, a new campaign manager and new media consultant. This likely means that Mark Riddle is out (pop!). He was then asked about the Aqua Buddha ad, whether he regretted it and whether it played a role in his decision to hire new campaign staff. He said that he did regret it, and regretted going against his first gut feeling when he saw the ad by giving it the OK.

I’ve got the video of Conway’s announcement and questions from the press coming soon, as well as video of the Moffett/Harmon campaign kickoff.

That’s the general consensus among the chirpers right now. His press conference is at 2:00 today, where I assume he’ll be asked why he’s been acting like a drama queen over the last two weeks and telling different people completely different stories.

Must Read: An open letter to Jack Conway

January 21, 2011
By David M. F. Schankula

First we had an open-letter to Steve Beshear from Ronnie Cottonpants and now, on a considerably different note, an open-letter from BlueBluegrass/Mr. Layton to Jack Conway.

It’s a scorching good read:

First, the good news. You have been every bit the honest, effective public servant we all knew you were, and have been an outstanding attorney general for the state of Kentucky. For that, Kentucky should be grateful. However: For you, the never-ending commitment shown by savvy and successful politicians to continue connecting with that public politically suddenly ended. You stopped working the picnics, the rallies, the dinners.

Respectfully, 2010 was a time when the Democratic loyalists worked harder in your race than you even knew. They gave millions, and spent hundreds of thousands of hours on every facet of trying to convince the party core base to turn out for you.

Go read it all!

A phenomenal ego:

Too bad he didn’t take any of those campaign contributions out of the ashes with him for his broke candidate.

The Jack Conway rumor is accelerating (UPDATE)

I was a skeptic last week, but I’m rapidly becoming a believer.

I’m upgrading the rumor that Jack Conway will drop out of the Attorney General race from 25% likely to 75%, based on what the birdie operatives in the labor tree are chirping. (Despite what the few remaining staff in the AG office are saying)

Prepare for all hell to break loose if this happens. Kentucky Democratic political fiefdoms, to your battle stations!

UPDATE: And now I’m told that he’s definitely in and announcing very soon. Let’s put the odds back at 50%. Flip a damned coin and grab some popcorn, I suppose. Drama, drama, drama.

Alison Lundergan Grimes making political announcement tomorrow (UPDATE)

With 6 days to go until the filing deadline for candidates in the 2011 statewide elections, there’s still a good deal of intrigue left in a few of the races. Will Hollenbach get more challengers for Treasurer? Will there be a third Republican ticket for governor? Will Jack Conway bow out and leave open a mad dash for the AG nomination among Democrats? Will someone challenge Beshear’s new SoS appointee, Alice Walker?

Well, go ahead and speculate, but Alison Lundergan Grimes is making a political announcement tomorrow morning. She’s been long rumored as a Secretary of State candidate, and we all know the Lundergan-Beshear rivalry. She’s also a lawyer.

Stay tuned to the Twitter Machine tomorrow morning and find out.

The Jack Conway rumors

The rumor spreading like wildfire is that Jack Conway will soon announce that he will not run for re-election as KY Attorney General.

Still seems unlikely to me (shocking, at least), but stay tuned.

Trey Grayson not running for KY Attorney General

November 24, 2010

From his Facebook note:

After many hours of reflection, conversations and prayer with family, friends, advisors and others, I want to announce, today, that I will not be a candidate for Attorney General — or any other office — in 2011. While I am not ruling out a campaign in future years, I am confident that this is the best decision for my family and me.

I appreciate all the encouragement from past supporters as well as complete strangers to run for Attorney General. In the final analysis, at this time, I want to spend more time with Nancy and the girls than an elective office will allow.

This desire was brought home to me a few weeks ago during the annual post-election Republican State Central Committee meeting. It was great to see so many of the candidates who won on Election Day. There were smiles on the faces of everyone in the room, including my own, about the Election Day outcomes. On the inside, however, I was torn, because to attend the meeting, I had to miss my youngest daughter Kate’s first-ever basketball game. As the girls have grown older, these conflicts are becoming more common and more difficult to address.

Even as I had meetings and conversations with many friends and stakeholders about a race in 2011, I couldn’t shake the feeling that I wouldn’t be able to reconcile my desire to have more family time with another grueling, statewide campaign and the extensive time required to be a successful elected official. So for the past few weeks, even going back before the November election, I have been leaning against running.

Some may say that this decision is related to Jack Conway’s announcement that he plans to seek re-election. It is not. I am confident of my ability to wage a successful campaign against Jack next November. I believe that more Kentuckians share my view that the Attorney General can and should play an important role in fighting the unconstitutional and anti-Kentucky actions of the federal government in areas like health care, energy and agricultural policy. I was looking forward to the two of us waging a vigorous but fair campaign, since we both respect each other. So, no, his announcement didn’t deter me from running.

What his announcement did, however, was move up my timetable. I had originally thought that I would discuss the decision in-depth with my family during Thanksgiving break, much as Nancy and I did during November 2002 about my first run for Secretary of State. So this weekend, in addition to working with the girls on dribbling, serving, raking leaves and making brownies, I spent a great deal of time thinking, praying and talking with Nancy. Ultimately, the decision was easy.

Insert Teabagger.
