Those of you in Louisville need to call law enforcement immediately, I’m not joking.
And David, I say this with sincerity: fuck you
Dan Mongiardo and Jack Conway said a whole lot of nothin‘ about the 2010 U.S. Senate race, leaving this progressive, whose vote they supposedly want, underwhelmed and unconvinced. Lt. Gov. Mongiardo begins with his familiar coal fields Eastern Kentucky story and wraps it up by saying how he *almost* defeated Sen. Bunning in 2004. Atty. Gen. Conway talks about protecting the children from sexual predators and then skillfully dances around the influence of Big Coal in the state. With that kind of courage, is it any wonder that it’s arguably the GOP’s race to lose?
Also on the radar, one of the country’s most prominent women-haters, Randall Terry, was in Louisville today doing some sort of performance art piece piece outside of Sen. Mitch McConnell’s office. It would be pretty hilarious if he and his followers weren’t so terrifying.
Larouche Ron Rand Paul looks like he’ going to rake in about $650,000 or so dollars in his “money bomb” today. His Larouchites Ronobots Randites have filled his war chest well past Dan Mongiardo, and almost doing so in this one day alone.
Who’s got faux libertarian fever out there! I know I do!
OK, let’s look at the fun fun fun crosstabs of the SUSA poll out today.
First, the Republican side, where things suddenly look good for Teh Rand.
Among Republicans aged 18-34
Paul 43% (!!!)
Grayson 13% (!!!)
Wow. That’s a hell of a lot of pot smoking libertarian kids on the Ron Rand train. Wonder if they’ll remember when it’s election day, though.
- SUSA actually found 10 black Republicans in KY.
- Moderate Republicans (where are they?) went much heavier for Grayson than conservative Republicans.
- Pro-choice Repubs went big for Grayson. We’ll see about that…
Eastern KY
Grayson 25
Paul 31
(WTF?!?)
Western KY
Grayson 29
Paul 24
Overall, it looks like hardcore right-wingers aren’t ready to anoint Senator Trey Grayson just yet.
On to the Dems:
Mongiardo wins young voters by 12%, Liberals by 13%, Pro-choicers by 10%, and North/Central KY by 4%.
This is great news, because Mongiardo is going to get absolutely clobbered in each of those categories 10 months from now. That support putting him ahead in this poll will vanish and reverse dramatically. (That is, unless somebody loses another dog or keeps half-assing this shit.)
In summary, this poll is kind of strange, because Grayson and Mongiardo fare better with more liberal voters. This will obviously change with the latter, but possibly the former, too.
I come away with two things:
1. Rand Paul will be a credible challenger to Trey Grayson.
2. It’s really fucking early.
The results are trickling in, I’ll post more as they come in. For now:
Dan Mongiardo: 39%
Jack Conway: 31%
Undecided or Other: 23%
Lt. Dan is up, but after 2 weeks of son-of-a-bitch-gate, this shows that his “20 point lead” in his internal push poll was a bad joke.
But the HUGE story of the poll is on the Republican side:
Trey Grayson: 37%
Rand Paul: 26%
O or U: 30%
Wowzer. I was NOT expecting this. Many expect a Grayson cakewalk in the primary, but if this poll is on the mark, this thing could turn into a real war.
More to come…
OK, here are the general election numbers from Jake:
* Grayson 46%
* Mongiardo 40%
* Undecided 14%
* Grayson 44%
* Conway 37%
* Undecided 18%
* Paul 38%
* Conway 43%
* Undecided 19%
* Paul 41%
* Mongiardo 43%
* Undecided 16%
Rand Paul is definitely the big winner in this poll.
War in two primaries, war in the general. Here we go.
Dr. Paul believes life begins at conception. He recognizes the most basic function of government is to protect life. It is unconscionable that government would facilitate the taking of innocent life. Dr. Paul opposes any federal funding for abortion.
Dr. Paul seeks to nullify Roe v. Wade.
Before 1973, abortion was illegal in most states. Since Roe v. Wade, over 50 million children have died in abortion procedures.
Dr. Paul would support legislation restricting federal courts from hearing cases like Roe v. Wade. Such legislation would only require a majority vote, making it more likely to pass than a pro-life constitutional amendment.
FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — Rand Paul, the son of 2008 presidential candidate Ron Paul, ended months of speculation Wednesday by saying he will run for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated next year by fellow Republican Jim Bunning.The Bowling Green ophthalmologist told The Associated Press he is entering the race and plans to run as a candidate with “outsider” credentials.
YOU get a teabag! YOU get a teabag! And YOU get a teabag!
At Fancy Farm, I asked Republican Senate candidate Rand Paul if President Obama was born in the United States and he said he “didn’t know”. Yes, Rand Paul is a birther.
Rand Paul also dedicated half of his speech to demanding that members of Congress read the entirety of every bill they vote on.
The next day, the birthers produced an AWESOME birth certificate from Kenya that proves Obama is a dirty foreign sleeper cell agent.
But perhaps Rand Paul’s birther friends need to, ugh, read the fine print. Here’s the translation of the security watermark on this smoking gun document:
NOTICE: This image is a work of parody and political commentary. It is not a genuine government document. Barack Obama was born in Hawaii. A certified copy of his birth record is freely available online. If you thought this was Obama’s real birth certificate, a “smoking gun” proving he’s not a natural-born citizen, then congratulations. You are an idiot. I made this from scratch. It is completely fake, and no document from Kenya or the United Kingdom resembles it.Obama’s president, and will be for the next 3 1/2 to 7 1/2 years. Get used to it.
Much like Sarah Palin, they are here for our entertainment, and no, they are never going away. For that, lets all be grateful.
With the tail-between-legs withdrawal of Senator Jim Bunning from the 2010 Senate race, good ole homophobe gay-hating Republicans in Kentucky are faced with a dilemma. The 2 remaining viable candidates, Trey Grayson and Rand Paul, do not have an rich history of protecting America from the scourge of pedophile molesters who want to tear married spouses away from each other with the lure of the dirty gay sex.
Rand Paul has absolutely nothing bad to say about The Gays on his campaign website, and assuming he has the same states’ rights libertarian bent of his Papi, he will certainly face the wrath of good Bible-thumping Gay-haters in the 2010 primary.
Trey Grayson also has a bit of a problem with The Gays. Trey tends to be rather two-faced on this issue, as he shows tolerance towards gays in some rooms, then plays up the God, Guns and Gays routine when amongst the crazy base. Grayson will be forced, very soon, to publicly pick a side in this battle: Does he support DOMA and DADT, while opposing the Hate Crimes Bill and domestic partner rights? Or will he seek to separate himself from the Neanderthal base by moving the Republican Party in a direction that won’t turn off voters 30-ish to younger who by a wide-margin are in favor of GLBTQ rights? We’ll find out soon. If I had to bet, he’ll choose the former.
But if he doesn’t, the Republican base is going to be angry and totally apathetic about this Senate race. Republicans do not have a prayer in competitive statewide races if they do not rally the Bible-thumping social conservative hate-mongers among their base. They will not contribute, and they certainly will not turn out to vote in numbers great enough to beat Jack Conway in the general election.
This is why I’m betting that Trey Grayson will find the old-time Gay-hating religion very soon. The question in this case would be, do Republicans trust this last-hour conversion? If not, you can expect 2 things: (1) depressed turnout among the conservative base, and (2) a semi-viable social-Neanderthal Republican challenger popping up at the last minute.
Anyway… maybe somebody will ask Trey these questions at Fancy Farm. Yes?
So say the wingnuts who loved them some Jim Bunning.
With Bunning out, the stage is set for a classic confrontation between the establishment: Grayson with McConnell’s backing, either overtly or covertly — and Dr. Rand Paul of Bowling Green, son of Rep. Ron Paul (R.-Tex.). Young Paul is a cinch to have the backing of his father’s nationwide network of donors who were the force behind Paul, Sr.’s abortive bid for the Republican presidential nomination last year. In addition, a number of party workers who loved Jim Bunning are likely to roll up their sleeves on behalf of first-time candidate Paul.“Like Jim, they are not very forgiving of the way Mitch behaved and they’ll take it out on Trey Grayson by working for Rand Paul,” my Kentucky source told me, adding that the younger Paul can also count on volunteers from the Kentuckians who participated in the anti-tax tea parties in April.
Popcorn. Get it.
