I’m happy that the Governor and his family are in New Blue Orleans today. It kind of behooves him to be there when the Commonwealth has two teams playing in the Final Four. I also don’t mind him using the state jet to get down there so long as the state gets reimbursed.
As a Democrat, what I do mind is the Kentucky Democratic Party using donor money to fly the governor around. I’ve asked around to people who know about these sorts of things and this was not a standard practice of past Democratic governors. In the linked article, representatives of the party claim that the trip involves Democratic Party political activities. I don’t buy it. Party spokesman Matt Erwin said “he would have to check” what political activities are going to be involved in the trip.
We’re not talking petty cash here either. Jack Brammer reports:
Beshear also used a state plane in April 2011 to take his family to the NCAA Final Four in Houston. The state Democratic Party picked up the $6,105 tab for the flight.
Since Beshear became governor in December 2008, . . . . The Democratic Party has reimbursed the state about $100,000 for his trips.
This is a short-sighted practice, because it hampers the party’s ability to raise the money it should be spending beating the likes of David Williams, Mitch McConnell, and Rand Paul. I know I don’t want to give money to the KDP for them to fly the Beshears around.
