It’s news like this that makes me wonder about the people who continue to defend Ben Chandler’s record and sentiments.
Basically, back in the 1980s, Ronald Reagan forbade US aid from going to any international organization that even uttered the word ‘abortion’ around women.
Clinton got rid of this rule, Bush II reinstated it and Obama got rid of it again.
Last year, a Mississippi Congressman used the rule — the Mexico City Policy — to block the International Violence Against Women Act and now the Republicans are trying to sneak it back in, this time via the House Foreign Affairs Committee and their work on the State Department and foreign operations bill.
This morning, as Foreign Policy reports, Democrats on the Committee tried to strip this language:
“None of the funds authorized to be appropriated by this act or any amendment made by this Act may be made available to any foreign nongovernmental organization that promotes or performs abortion, except in cases of rape or incest or when the life of the mother would be endangered if the fetus were carried to term.”
And did it work?
[Howard Berman's (D-CA)] amendment failed by a 17-25 vote that played out largely along party lines. Only one Democrat broke ranks, Rep. Ben Chandler (D-KY). The Ros-Lehtinen language is actually an expansion of the policy as it existed during the Bush administration because it would ban all funding for organizations that discuss abortion and not make exceptions for certain programs such as HIV/AIDS funding. Bush made allowances for HIV/AIDS programs to receive funding even within organizations that were affected by the policy.
“The provision included in this bill is far more extreme than the Global Gag Rule policy that was implemented under Presidents Reagan, George Bush, or George W. Bush,” said Berman. “It bars ALL assistance to local health care providers in poor countries – including HIV/AIDS funding, water and sanitation, child survival, and education. In the name of ‘right to life,’ the majority is cutting off funds that are literally saving hundreds of thousands of lives.”
Yeah.
So our Congressman voted to go even more extreme than George W. Bush.
Ben Chandler’s war on women goes global, now targetting women and children suffering from HIV, AIDS, starvation, lack of clean drinking water, and… I mean seriously:
Is there any Chandler aide, employee, fundraiser, friend, campaign contributor or stable-minded Democrat in the state of Kentucky who can defend Ben Chandler’s vote here?
Anyone?
And how can you in good faith or good conscience continue to support him?

SHE WON'T GO!

Ben Chandler has one thing going for him next round, Andy Barr.
Chandler is a sewer rat who has benefited from his family name. His deplorable attitude toward women’s issues is shocking and now this. Pathetic little man who should change his registration and be done with it.

Why attack the character of a man who has none?
Ben is Ben, expect nothing more from him.
